The New Zealand Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
The Society was formed in 1972 to promote biochemistry and molecular biology in New Zealand and to facilitate communication between those involved.
Our Mission
The Society organizes and promotes regional activities, as well as a national meeting that is held annually (often in conjunction with societies with overlapping interests in biology and chemistry). It is open to all with interests in biochemistry and/or molecular biology.
A key focus of the NZSBMB is to support early-career researchers in biochemistry and molecular biology. Travel grants are awarded twice a year, to assist PhD students attending overseas conferences. Student representatives from each of the Society's regions are also supported at the national meeting, via travel grants and invitations to speak at the NZSBMB Student Symposium.
We also recognize one distinguished member for their published research with the Custom Science NZSBMB Award and oration, which is a centre piece of the national meeting.

Who Is involved
The Society and its executive committee contribute to government policy through the Royal Society of New Zealand, of which NZSBMB is a Constituent Organisation.
Internationally, we are members of the Federation of Asian and Oceanian Biochemists and Molecular Biologists (FAOBMB) and the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB). We also have an agreement with the Biochemical Society, to sponsor students who attend each others' meetings.
In 2014, we also strengthened our ties with the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). Members of NZSBMB can now register for the annual ComBio meetings at ASBMB members' rates (and the Aussies can do the same for our meetings).
